Week 12: Role of Federal Government in Schools $$$$$$

In this article, the author covers " What the federal government controls, how it controls it, and how that balance does ( and doesn't) change from administration to administration." Although the Department of Education was created in the late 1860's, it was not until the mid-1960's that the federal government started to play a large role in education. One reason being that in the late 1980's political power houses started arguing that federal and state laws should be mandated because they felt like the United States was falling behind on a global scale.

This article  states that the turning point for federal oversight was in 2001 when No Child Left Behind was implemented. When Obama came in to office he replaced this with the Every Student Succeeds Act . This act made nationwide standardized tests to hold schools accountable for what they are teaching. Personally, I think that the federal governments role in education is important, especially when they make nationwide standards. Nationwide standards allow equity for all students on a global and local scale. My only concern with these standards is the power of money that comes with making them.

In my personal opinion how does congress dictate where to hand money out to? Is it based solely on what they find important and their own moral beliefs? To me, money should be handled at a state level. State governments know the needs of every area of their state.

  1. I think your viewpoint about states handling education funding is a stance that many have taken over the years. The federal government has much say in a lot of the policies enforced nationwide that set the tone for learning from the top down. As far as standards go, I think there are some standards that should be mandated from the country but the meat of curriculum should vary at the state level and be implemented as needed in each district. It is also so tricky mixing politics and education even tho it seems that they go hand in hand.

  2. Hi, I agree with you that the federal government paly an irreplaceable role in education especial the nationwide standards making. As for the educational funding, I think maybe combine the opinion from congress and also state governments, but the state governments demand a greater say since they are more familiar with the state reality than congress.
