Week 9 Tyler Ch 2

Experience is one of the world’s greatest teacher. As human we learn through experiencing the world as well as the people and things in it. In Chapter 2 we go over Learning experiences and teachers manipulating the environment in order to help the students learn. Our author Tyler defines learning experiences as the interaction between the learner and the external conditions in the environment to which he can react. Personally, I think it is important to comprehend this definition. Students need to be able to resonate with lesson in some way shape or form. This happens when we are able to set up situations that will evoke a desired behavior. A great example of this is talking about social justice issues with students. It is a very powerful topic that hits home for a lot of students. This motivates them to learn and be interested in the lesson. This is because it helps to invoke logical thinking in students.  Tyler even states that “learning experiences to develop thinking will utilize various problems…. Problems that are real to students so as to stimulate their reaction.” (p.69) As a student, I feel that when a lesson is relatable or asks serious question that is when I find interest. This is but one of the 4 ways we can use learning experiences to hit our objectives as educators. Tyler goes on to mention learning experiences by: acquiring information, developing social attitudes, and developing interest. The biggest take away from this reading is that teacher must constantly revise their pedagogies. How do we expect students to learn new information, if we are not trying learning new approaches that will help their learning experiences. Tyler advocates for teachers be more invested in the things students think about and value trying to get them thinking on it because that is what will get them to remembering the content. When we do this we show our warmth which is what makes the memories that maintains the lesson.

  1. Thank you for sharing! I like when you said "Students need to be able to resonate with lesson in some way shape or form". This is something that I think more educators need to zone in on. If a child does not feel like they can connect with a subject or lesson, they are going to feel unmotivated. I can remember my first year teaching I read two read-a-loud chapter books, in which I choose because they are both classic books. One of my students while reading the second book said " Ms. Pfeiffer, why do we never read a chapter book about black children?" This comment has stuck with me sense. I thought these books were just classics that everyone could relate too, but that is because of my background and ideology. I have since added read-a-louds and guided reading books that can connect with all my students. When you give students material that they value, they are more likely to learn from it.

  2. First of all, thank you very much for sharing. I agree with you very much: Students need to be able to resonate with lesson in some way shape or form. Only when the students agree with the content of the teacher's explanation in class and have experience and resonance, the learning effect will be better. As for the biggest take away from this reading is that teacher must constantly revise their pedagogies. I think it is also very meaningful. Teachers'teaching needs to be adjusted in time. Different educational objects and different time may require different levels of teaching. A truly excellent classroom is based on the level of all students, do their best to stimulate their greatest interest in learning.

  4. Thank you for your sharing. I really agree that when a lesson is relatable to students’ life or experience or asks something about serious questions that will attract students’ interest. Teaching is not just teaching but should related to life and let students find the significance in learning so that they want to learn more. They can find the happiness by using what they have learned to solve problems that they meet during life. That is really meaningful. Besides, I really agree that teacher must constantly revise their pedagogies. Today everything changes really fast. Teachers should adapt to the world and learn new things to teach their students not just use the traditional way and the out of fashion idea.

    I‘ve learned a lot by reading this week's article. I highly agree that learning experience is vitally important to students. As a teacher, in addition to teaching the knowledge in textbooks, we should also provide students with resources and space to let them think and feel. I personally think that the learning experience not only refers to how much knowledge is learned, how many books are read, but the process by which students apply the knowledge to the actual life by summarizing and reviewing. This will be a long-term process and they will continue to build cognition.

  6. I wholeheartedly agree with you and Tyler. I'm curious about veteran teachers in an era of extreme accountability. If I'm a 20-year teacher and my students are meeting and exceeding expectations, what's my desire to refresh lessons so they're fresh and relatable? What's my desire to adjust my methods for young people in 1998 and 2018?

    There is a lot of coaching for young teachers, it is often mandatory or highly encouraged, but continuing education for veteran educators. Especially tenured veterans. It should be the district's responsibility and the principal should craft a continuing education plan after classroom observation.
