Week 9 Readings

Chapter 2 of Tyler discusses how to set up appropriate learning experiences to engage students in learning. The author explains that learning experiences can be described as a learner's relationships to their learning environment or external conditions that causes the learner to participate in active learning. Although students may sit in the same classroom, every student in the classroom will not gain the same learning experience. The author list principles and objectives of learning experiences that can help in structure an appropriate environment for learning.

Principles.
Tyler lists some principles of how a student will attain their learning experience. First, a student should be given an opportunity to practice problem solving and critical thinking within their environment. Second, the student should feel rewarded, or be given satisfactions, for completing learning objectives. Third, the learning experience should fulfill the learner's personal attributes. Fourth and fifth, a variety of learning experiences can be used to attain the same educational objectives and similar learning experiences will not always show the same result.

Objectives
Tyler list objectives that learning experiences should be able to attain. Learning experiences should enhance a learner's ability to problem solve, or think logically and critically. A student's learning environment can either reach those objectives, or come short of doing so. Tyler mentions that some difficulties that may come with learning how to problem solve is how a student gains the experience to do so. "He has not acquired the objective when the teacher does the problem solving and the student only watches" (pg. 70). Objectives should also allow students the ability to come up with multiple solutions to a problem. A student can fall short of this goal if the environment does not allow them to think strategically in this manner. A proper learning environment should also provide students with basic concepts or models for understanding. A lack of concept structure may lead a student to falling short of this objective.

Other objectives the author highlights are developing social attitudes and areas of interests for the learner. The learner should be able to participate in extracurricular activities, develop a social/emotional readiness, and participate in outcomes they find rewarding.

As someone who has little experience in the classroom as an educator, what are some specific ways learning experience objectives can be meet or structured  by the educator? What are some examples of how to set up an environment that allows a student to think critically, problem solve, and explore interests?  What are some examples in your own classroom that promotes a student's learning experience?

  1. First, I think you did an awesome job summarizing the objectives and principles. I also loved your questions at the end because it gives me a chance to reflect on my own teaching and classroom. I think the biggest component for setting up an environment that allows every child to succeed is by forming relationships with students to figure out how they work well. My class this year LOVES " which number does not belong" number talks. This promotes critical thinking and problem solving. The students must pick 1 out of 4 numbers that do not belong, and tell me why. This allows all students to participate and think critically about the problem.

  2. First of all, thank you for sharing. You have made a good summary of the content of this chapter. For the last three questions in the article, I have thought deeply. For the second question, I think it needs several steps: 1. Preface: arousing students'critical spirit in the situation created in the classroom 2. Beginning: cultivating students' critical thinking in the process of processing information 3. Developing: cultivating students in interaction. Critical Spirit 4. Climax: Cultivating Students'Critical Thinking Skills in Classroom Discussions 5. Ending: Cultivating Students' Critical Thinking in the Process of Students' Reflection
For the last question, I think we should first establish a good teacher-student relationship, and then stimulate students'interest in learning. Then we should make clear the teaching objectives and thoroughly understand the contents of the textbooks. At the same time, teachers should try to optimize the classroom teaching structure and timely feedback and evaluation.
In short, the ultimate goal of teachers is to pay attention to the development of students, so that students can really learn and gain.

  3. Thank you for your blog. I think it is important to improve students' engagement in learning, which leads to the improvement of their learning performance. And I agree with Tyler that it is for students to be exposed to practice solving problems. As what you mentioned, "the principles and objectives of learning experiences can help in structuring appropriate learning environment, however, I think in turn creating an appropriate learning environment can also decide students' learning experiences. Then in my opinion, in order to promote students' critical thinking and problem solving abilities, teachers can create an appropriate learning environment for them to provide them with diverse opportunities to develop their abilities. I think this might be an efficient way to engage students in learning.

  4. Great post!
I agree with you that critical thinking is important to learning experiences. Before I came to the United States, I had a period of experience as a primary school teacher. I found that the most effective way to guide students to think critically is probably let them ask questions. By asking questions, they will form a better knowledge framework and be able to understand their own shortcomings. In addition, the interaction is also important. We can use “mutual learning” as the teaching methods to let students study by teaching each other. By sharing their own thoughts and listening to others' ideas, they will have a deeper understanding of knowledge.

  5. Thanks for you blog posting. The author explains that learning experiences can be described as a learner’s relationship to their learning environment or external conditions that causes the learner to participate inactive leaning. Although students may sit in the same classroom, every student in the classroom will not gain the same learning experience. I highly agree with this point. According to my own experience, my history grades was horrible when I was in high school and I couldn’t understand what teacher was talking about almost every time. But my classmate who was next to me was very good at history. Also, he couldn’t study anything if the classroom was noisy but I can. This shows that classroom actually can be demonstrated in several ways. Such as how students adjust to the teacher’s teaching style or methods, or if the classroom is quiet or not. I think as teachers, we should communicate with students more when problems come up.
