Week 6 blog:Foundations of Instructional Design
The theme of this week's discussion is Foundations of Instructional Design
The first article UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN® FRAMEWORK mainly talk about the UbD framework. which offers a planning process and structure to guide curriculum, assessment, and instruction. Its two key ideas are contained in the title: 1) focus on teaching and assessing for understanding and learning transfer, and 2) design curriculum “backward” from those ends. In this article ,the author points out that the UbD framework is based on seven key tenets:
1. Learning is enhanced when teachers think purposefully about curricular planning.2. The UbD framework helps focus curriculum and teaching on the development and deepening of student understanding and transfer of learning.3. Understanding is revealed when students autonomously make sense of and transfer their learning through authentic performance. 4. Effective curriculum is planned backward from long-term, desired results through a three-stage design process. 5. Teachers are coaches of understanding, not mere purveyors of content knowl- edge, skill, or activity. 6. Regularly reviewing units and curriculum against design standards enhances curricular quality and effectiveness, and provides engaging and professional discussions.7. The UbD framework reflects a continual improvement approach to student achievement and teacher craft.
The UbD framework offers a three-stage backward design process for curriculum planning, and includes a template and set of design tools that embody the process. 1: Desired Results Stage 2: Evidence Stage 3: Learning Plan
The second article : Principles of Instruction Research-Based Strategies That All Teachers Should Know presents 10 research-based principles of instruction.
1.Begin a lesson with a short review of previous learning.2. Present new material in small steps with student practice after each step.3.Ask a large number of questions and check the responses of all students.4.Provide models.5.Guide student practice.6 .Check for student understanding.7.Obtain a high success rate.8.Provide scaffolds for difficult tasks.9 .Require and monitor independent practice.10 .Engage students in weekly and monthly review. These principles come from three sources: (a) research in cognitive science, (b) research on master teachers, and (c) research on cognitive supports.
In my opinion, this UbD framework is a preferable teaching system design, which is not only an important part of teaching, but also a complex teaching technology.Excellent teaching design is conducive to the combination of teaching theory and practice, to the scientific teaching work, and to the rapid growth of young teachers.
Teaching is both a science and an art. It is a science, because teaching is conducted under the guidance of scientific theory; it is an art. Teachers'personality, language charm and mastery of the classroom in teaching give people an artistic enjoyment. As a young teacher, the way to imitate and accumulate experience is of positive significance. Excellent teaching design is conducive to the cultivation of scientific thinking habits and abilities, and to the improvement of the ability to find and solve problems.
As a young teacher, I think it is very meaningful to use modern educational technology to promote teaching design. In recent years, with the rapid development of educational technology, the field of application of educational technology has been greatly broadened. However, modern educational technology, especially the information technology with multimedia and network as the core, brings not only the innovation of means, but also the transformation of the concept and mode of personnel training in the information age, which has triggered profound changes in educational concepts, teaching contents and teaching methods. We should use modern means to influence teaching content, teaching and learning aspects and evaluation methods, pay attention to the deep integration of information technology and curriculum, pay attention to the integration of various learning modes (that is, the idea of Blending Learning), and make teaching design sublimate and improve on the basis of summing up practical experience, so as to promote the development of students.
Thank you for the blog! It was a great summation of the article and the UbD process. It make sense to think about what you want students to be able to do first before planning the assessments meant to determine whether or not they know what they ought to know and then the learning experiences that they need in order to get to know what they ought to know. It's much easier to say than do. I'm lucky that my school at one point funded a summer program for teachers to come in and focus on UbD-like unit plans/curriculum maps for our classes, and I was able to participate in working on the ones that our Spanish department still (mostly) uses. It certainly does take a lot of forethought, though, and continuous work to evaluate if the students are successful! Thanks again for the blog!
ReplyDeleteHi, Hualin. Thank you for your posting. I really agree that we educators should use the the idea of blending learning and bending teaching. As you said, we should use modern means to influence teaching content, teaching and learning aspects and evaluation methods, pay attention to the deep integration of information technology and curriculum, pay attention to the integration of various learning modes. I think there is a really convenient APP in our country - wechat. Many teachers communicate with students via it and they have assignments on it as well. However, I learned that the government publish a rule that the primary school teachers should not give students homework online, the reason is to protect their eyes. At first, I could not understand this rule, however, after a few days thinking I understand. The screen with blue light may not good to the students’ eyes. Sometimes the modern teaching bring convenient and also bring some negative effects. How should we deal with this problem and meet the times’ need? I think that a really complex question to think about.
ReplyDeleteI agree that begin a lesson with a short review of previous learning. our teacher are supposed to combine students previous knowledge with the new knowledge which help learning systematically. The coherence of the curriculum is very important. And I think the revise learning not just refer to the previous chapter of the textbook but also their background knowledge. Besides, the time of review should be taken into account. It shouldn't be too long or too short.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting! You did an awesome job summarizing the key components of the UBD framework. Like the real UbD template, this article was overwhelming at first ( similar to the actual UbD template). The idea of UbD is extremely helpful in aiding a meaningful curriculum.
ReplyDeleteI agree that teaching is both scientific theory and art. I loved that you touched on educational technology. There are many teachers out there that do not want to deal with educational technology because they are "old school" and do not know " how to use it". I believe like you said that we should be using modern means for teaching content and practices. Finding a balance between educational technology and "old school" content should be something that all teachers strive for. I do believe that too much technology time can be harmful to students and that they do not need everyday all day. However, as we evolve as society so does the technology out there. I use so many meaningful and engaging apps with my students. If my students are engaged with a curriculum aligned math game on their IPad, why not allow them to go on it once a week? I think as we evolve so do our teaching practices.
Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I really like the way that you summarize this article. This way helped me understand better of this article.
In addition, I’m totally agree with that “As a young teacher, I think it is very meaningful to use modern educational technology to promote teaching design” I think some traditional ways to teach is helpful for us as teachers, but new methods based on the modern society are important for us to improve the skills of teaching and help students to learn better
