Welcome to ED 430!

      Each week, 5-6 class members will post to the class blog by 5pm on Tuesday. Each of you will post to the blog 3 times during the semester. 

      The weekly blog posts should be substantive contributions to the body of knowledge we are developing as a community. Rather than simply summarizing the readings, direct posts to your own interpretations and questions. For example, ask questions about the reading and provide tentative answers, make connections to your own history as a learner, make connections to other texts, argue with some point raised in the reading, analyze or critique guiding concepts in the reading, consider how the readings might be interpreted by a different age group, or a different social or cultural group.  

      Each week that you are not blogging, please respond to TWO posts. Responses should engage a conversation and should share in gathering resources that will benefit the group. 

     You are still responsible to read assigned articles on weeks you are not blogging.

      Our class blog should stand as a lasting archive of arguments, thinking, connections, and resources for understanding curriculum and instruction.

WEEK 9 TYLER, CHAPTER 2: HOW CAN LEARNING EXPERIENCES BE SELECTED WHICH ARE LIKELY TO BE USEFUL IN ATTAINING THESE OBJECTIVES? Desired learning objectives are inherently part of a student’s learning process. In chapter 2, Tyler provides the general principles in selecting learning experiences, followed by 4 characteristics of learning experiences that educators might find useful in attaining various learning objectives. What are learning experiences?  Tyler states that learning occurs via the experiences and reactions a learner has to the environment in which (s)he/they is placed, in other words, the reactions of the learner to the environment determines what is learned. Some important things to note:  Learning experiences are not the same as content, and instead refers to the interaction between the learner and the external conditions (s)he/they react to.  The learner is an active participant because aspects of the environment or external factors arouse interest/attention

week 14

Apple’s article talked about pedagogy, patriotism and democracy by using the example of 11 September 2001. The author said that it is important to place what happened in the wake of 11 September in a context of the ‘American’ psyche and of dominant American understandings of the roles the United States plays in the world. And the author mentioned some teachers ignored the horror by simply resorting to normality as a defence against paralysis. In other classes, days were spent tin discussion of the events. Sadness, disbelief and shock were registered.  When I read about this, I was wondering what kind of class I will choose to have if I were one of the teachers. I think I probably would choose the latter one. I want to lead the class to talk about the events, let the students sharing their feelings about it. I agree with the author that pedagogical work needed to be done. But it wasn’t a simple issue. On the one hand, pedagogical can brings people together and unity for a country.

REFLECTION ON COURSE

Over the course of this semester, I have really enjoyed my time in ED 430. One of this things I respected and appreciated the most was the people that showed up and shared their opinions with all of us. I love hearing different perspectives and thoughts on the different topics that we learned about. I think one of the lessons that sticks out the most to me was when we looked at different education quotes and had to pick our favorite.  I surprised myself with what quotes I agreed and disagreed with. I also loved seeing what quotes everyone else shared as their favorites. Another memorable day was when we had the student board come in and talk about stresses of high school life and curriculum. This really helped me reflect on my own teaching because I got to see school through the eyes of students. It has been a long time since I was in high school, and things have definitely changed. Hearing the thoughts of kids currently in the education system made me thing about my own students.
